A Fort Worth Family Photographers' Guide

 

Choosing outfits for family photos can feel overwhelming — especially when you’re juggling kids, schedules, and a million other things. If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet thinking “Where do I even start?” — you’re not alone.


As a family photographer, one of the most common questions I get is: “What should we wear for our session?”


The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple guidelines can make a huge difference in how your photos feel and how confident everyone looks.

Start With One Anchor Color

Instead of trying to match everyone perfectly, choose one main color to build around. Soft neutrals and earthy tones photograph beautifully and never go out of style.

Some great options include:


• Creams, beiges, and soft whites

• Sage green, muted blues, or dusty rose

• Warm browns, tans, or soft grays


Once you pick your anchor color, mix in complementary tones for the rest of the family.

Coordinate - Don't Match


Matching outfits used to be the go-to, but coordinated outfits create a much more natural and timeless look.

Think:

• Different shades of the same color

• Mixing solids with subtle textures

• Letting each family member’s outfit feel like them

This adds visual interest and keeps your photos from looking too “posed.”

Avoid logos, neons, and busy patterns

Logos and bold graphics tend to pull attention away from what matters most — your connection. Neon colors and busy patterns can also reflect light in unflattering ways and distract from faces.

When in doubt:

• Choose solids or very subtle patterns

• Skip words, characters, and large logos

• Keep it simple and classic

Dress for the Season


Texas weather plays a big role in outfit choices.

For warmer months:

• Lightweight, breathable fabrics

• Flowy dresses and comfortable layers

• Avoid anything that feels restrictive or heavy

For cooler months:

• Layers like cardigans, jackets, or scarves

• Soft textures such as knits or denim

• Closed-toe shoes that are easy to move in
